Merddin's New Tanks -2003

This illustrated tale was originally written as it happened over the Christmas period of 2003 to provide a blow by blow account for those not with us in Wales.

The plan is to reshow it here for awhile and then it will move to be part of the full story of the rebuild

Now we're up to the 30th December and time is running out.

Today's report is another brief one because we have been very busy. Turning tank one over was really easy justifying the preparation with the lifting beam. Turning the tank over would have made interesting photo's but I was too busy driving the hoist doing the turning. Meanwhile the team doing tank 2 were cracking on a pace.

Scrap Line

Work continues cutting up the old drivers side tanks.

Scrap Line

Parts reclamation continues reclaiming parts from the Drivers side tanks om four road in the old shop as the new shop is full of new tanks.

Last Look

Take a last look down the well before the end caps are welded on. You'll not see this view again.

Finish Welding

The end caps are now welded in place and the welds are being dressed with grinders.

Upside Down

Whilst the tank was upside down the holes to bolt the old valance were drilled.

Tank 1

Some effort has been made to make sure that we have done all the welding needed whilst the tank is upside down.

Right Way Up

Back the right way up probably for keeps now the end step and sand box brackets are welded on.

Water Proofing

The top end tanks are baing painted with the 2 pack epoxy water proofing. This is the first coat in place last thing today

The inside of the covers for the water tank section are also coated with a 1st coat of epoxy water proofing. The bottom end tank is for fuel so doesn't get a coating.

Tank 2

Meanwhile tank 2 approaches completion on the jig

Bottom Plate

Tank 2 awaits the fitting of the bottom of the well section last thing today

Tops to do

Tank 2 also needs the tops added which are all prepared ready

Things are getting a little fraught as we still have the pair of tanks for the Earl to do, although these should be faster as there is less that can be finished without an engine to try it against.
