Merddin's New Tanks -2003

This illustrated tale was originally written as it happened over the Christmas period of 2003 to provide a blow by blow account for those not with us in Wales.

The plan is to reshow it here for awhile and then it will move to be part of the full story of the rebuild

This was posted on the 3rd January with just one day left for this epic working party.

JOB DONE!!!!!!!!!!!

Next to last day and the last tank is out of the jig.

WANT ONE!!!!!!!!

Without this one toll we would never have got this done. Its a cordless impact driver. We were loaned this one. We now want one, anyone got 350

ME outside

Only briefly but Merddin was outside for a while today

Tank 3

Tanks 3 and 4 will be stored for two years now so a thorough coat of paint is required

Tank 3

The painting involved some lying down on the job

Tank 3

More paint being applied

Tank 3

Yet more paint. This is a proven rust preventing primer

Tank 3

No point stressing yourself

Tank 3

Once painted tank 3 was lifted into wagon 63

Tank 3

By sitting it on packings it sits in the wagon overhangine the ends slightly

Tank 3 - Lifting

The speader beam makes lifting these tanks really easy

Tank 3 - trucked

Thts it in the wagon. Tomorrow it will be joined by tank 4 and they will be lashed together.

Tank 4 - Resting?

Not really resting, PJ is under tank 4 to do some welding.

Tank4 - Welding

This is where the top of him is welding the top seam.

Tank 4 - Welding

A close up of PJ welding inside tank 4.

Tank 4 - Base Plate

The base is one of the last bits to be added. Here it is being tacked together.

Tank 4- Tacking

These are some of the last welds needed to the tank itself. Just the lifting beam to be assembled and then the lift can begin.

Nearly Done

The last bits are being done and the tank prepared for lifting.

Lift Off

Tank 4 leaves the jig

Tank 4 - Upright

That's it, the last one out of the jig at 18:04 on 03/01/04

This will be the last report for now. Tomorrow morning tank 4 gets a coat of paint and the jig gets dismantled. there may be photo's later in the week but I will be dismantling my PC later this evening and won't have it available until I get it set up again at home.
